Burns Block
The Burns Block was built in 1905 and is one of the few brick buildings built after 1902 when a new city bylaw required buildings to be built out of brick following the 1902 fire. The building is a reminder of the fires that terrorized mining communities in the early 1900s, as it has lasted through two of the most devastating fires in Rossland, the fires of 1927 and 1929. The building was built by Pat Burns and his company P. Burns & Co. Burns ran a Meat Company in this location beginning in 1905, and this spot continued to hold Butcher Shops until 1977. Burns Meat Packing Company was a popular meatpacking company throughout Western Canada in the 20th century. Since 1977, Rossland’s Associate Medical Clinic has occupied the main floor, with apartments above.
