The Rossland Museum & Discovery Centre is pleased to host a workshop focusing on key preservation and long-term storage needs of archival materials/collections. We are excited to provide professional learning opportunities to museums, archives, and heritage enthusiasts in the surrounding communities.
Join us for an exciting and educational 2-day workshop with archives expert Linda Wills. We will be exploring prevention methods to protect archival materials, how to repair damage and properly store objects to stop further deterioration. In addition, we will be demonstrating making in-house storage boxes and padded hangers.
DAY ONE: How Do I Do That? Preservation Methods for Archival Materials
This day the instructor Linda Wills will be explaining and demonstrating some of the tedious but must needed preservation tasks within archives. Using the Rossland Museum’s archival collection, we will be taking a closer look at flattening, repairing, describing, and storage of maps. Encapsulating important documents. Cleaning, mending, and storing rare books and how to safely respond to mould. Learn how to take apart framed artwork and working with albums. We will also be discussing the proper storage and handling of photo negatives and newspapers. It will be a full day of engaging, hands-on learning!
DAY TWO: Understanding the Needs of Your Collections and the Best Care for Them
Today the focus will be on making your own materials to support the preservation of your collection along with other key museum collection care topics. Making in-house storage boxes and padded hangers. How to wash and repair fragile textiles, leather care and much more! This day will end with a Q&A period. We encourage attendees to bring lots of questions and any archival materials you would like the archivist to have a look at.
You can register for the full 2-days or pick a day that interests you most.
Registration fee for Day One is $30 and Day Two is $20; Includes treats and refreshments.
