Snk̛míp Dig Deeper
As an idealistic conservation group strives to restore a damaged wetland, tensions escalate with off-road motorized users. Then a startling revelation uncovers the site's Indigenous history, propelling us on a transformative journey that makes us 'dig deeper' to understand whose land this truly is.
A land-trust organization is busy restoring a wetland when they discover the property is in fact an ancient Indigenous village site. They search out the First People of the land but their reconciliation effort is complicated by the fact that the present-day First People, the Sinixt, have been declared extinct by the Canadian government. So how do you reconcile with an extinct people?
Becoming allies with the Sinixt requires the conservationists to re-examine their settler notions of land ownership, confront the appalling racism of Canada’s exploitive colonial policies, and learn to work with traditional Indigenous knowledge in restoring a marsh called Snk’mip (sink-meep).
Shot over the course of six years in Sinixt tmxʷúlaʔxʷ (traditional territory) and co-produced and co-directed by Autonomous Sinixt Matriarch Marilyn James, this feature-length documentary film challenges settler constructs of history, land ownership and dominator culture.
Snk̛míp Dig Deeper takes viewers on a transformative journey, to learn how ecological restoration and stewardship and reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples must go hand in hand.
