Staff Favourites

As part of #AskACurator day, we’ve asked our staff to share some of their favourite artifacts from the collection!

For some, it was definitive, whereas others - like our Collections Manager, Sara - had a harder time narrowing it down. Keep reading to find out about a few of our favourite things!

Sarah - Researcher

Our small collection of fire insurance maps have to be my favourite thing in the museum! These maps give a fantastic overview of what Rossland looked like during the particular year in one compacted location... where buildings and businesses were, street names and changes, and even building materials. I can look at these and find out several different forms of information in one location for many research requests as opposed to needing multiple sources.

It’s a tie between our early 1900s purple, velvet, travelling jacket and our large record player on display in the Parlour exhibit. I love the jacket because it’s something that I would totally wear today! As for the record player, who doesn't love music!

Joelle - Museum Director

I narrowed it down by my two favourite topics - hockey and trains. I love the old wooden, straight-blade Warriors hockey stick full of signatures and our restored CPR Caboose! I couldn’t leave out the incredible handmade cabin stove from Cookie L’Ecluse currently on display in our ski wing though!

Copper bucket and heavy water sample from Project 9

Our Museum Assistant Callum has been doing a lot of research into Rossland's history this summer. One of the most interesting things he has learned about is Project 9, CM&S’s contribution to the development of the atomic bomb in WWII!

Sara - Collections Manager

It's incredibly hard for me to narrow it down to one or two favourite pieces in our extensive collection. My favourite thing depends completely on what I'm working on that day! These are a few of the artifacts that I have fallen in love with or found to have a really cool back story.
