Tales of a Mountain Playground - New Exhibit at the Prestige Mountain Resort

Although primarily known for skiing and mountain biking today, it’s time to shine a spotlight on some of Rossland’s more unique sports.

Rossland has a long history with sports and teams, including the Rossland baseball team that was organized before Rossland was even incorporated. Town celebrations such as Dominion and Labour days were filled with sporting events for the community. Game days drew scores of people supporting the local teams as they faced off against the neighbouring communities. For playoff games, Rosslander’s would travel to support their teams.

2315.0032 - Columbia Avenue in Rossland on Dominion Day, July 1st c.1909

2291.0006 - Drag race between Wainman (druggist) & Charlie Brett (CPR conductor) 24 May 1922. Wainman was victorious.

While Rossland’s championship athletes and teams are amazing, Mountain Playground: Rosslanders at Play turns our attention to some of Rossland’s more eclectic sports. From the turn of the century drilling contests to the Winter Carnival snow canoe races - Rossland definitely knows how to play in some unique ways!

Based around three key trophies, Mountain Playground features the history and artifacts from some of Rossland’s more unique sporting events. Stop by the Prestige Mountain Resort to learn more about one of the Rossland Winter Carnival’s most unique races and what sports our early firefighters and miners spent their free time on!

Thank you to Jesse and the team at the Prestige Mountain Resort for their continued support of our outreach program!

Without our amazing community partners we couldn’t do half of what we do!
